My Story

From Signwriter to General Builder and Renovator.

My name is Damon Lovell and this is my Blog…

As a General Builder and Home Renovator with over 40 years’ experience within the Industry and extensive knowledge in Kitchen Design and Manufacturing, Home Renovations, Painting and Decorating, Landscaping and Interior Design.

I want to share my experience through this Blog and provide a source of information, for you, my readers, to hopefully give you the confidence and enthusiasm to embark on your own Home Projects and answer those questions that  have been keeping you from starting on your own.

As mentioned, my experience spans over 40 years, and took many different roads to get to where I’m at now, and as the saying goes, it didn’t happen overnight.

As a kid growing up, I was always interested in Art, Drawing and Sport. Throughout school I gave more dedication to my Art, Technical studies and Physical Education lessons rather than Science and English. My mother used to call me mr Doobe, because I was always doing something.

I spent many days in Dads shed building go carts to race down the huge hill down the road from home, pulling our bikes apart and rebuilding them better and quicker and giving them new paint jobs which all the local kids were envious off.

An active Lifestyle is Key…

My sporting interests through my schooling years were, Aussie rules Football, Cricket, Tennis and BMX.

Without sounding like a big note, I did achieve high levels of success in any sport that I dedicated myself to and was fortunate enough to be naturally gifted at most things I put my mind to.

In my later teens, I became super focused on BMX (Bicycle Moto Cross). I competed at a very high level here in Australia within my local and state BMX clubs.

Sport and fitness played a huge role on my ability to stay focused, keep positive and create life changing goals.

I Knew what I wanted to do Early…

At the early age of 13, I already knew what I wanted to do as a career. I wanted to become a Sign writer. So it was through year 9 at high school that I enrolled into our local TAFE School for night classes in Signwriting and Painting & Decorating. This was to become the best decision that I could have made at the time.

During year 11 at High school, age 15, I started to apply for positions at Sign Writing companies, any position, I didn’t care, as long as I had a job, and it was in that field.

At the age of 16, I was offered a job with White Adds, a sign writing company in Adelaide, South Australia. 3 months into the job, they offered me an apprenticeship position within the company and due to the fact I had already completed three years of night classes at TAFE whilst at high school, I was automatically enrolled as a second year apprentice. So by the age of 19, I was a fully qualified sign writer and painter and decorator.

Time to Branch out on my Own…

Throughout my early working career, I gained many more skills within the signage industry, including the manufacture of Neon and illuminated Signs.  I was 27 when the desire to be my own boss became a real itch, and at the age of 28 in 1998 I branched out on my own and started my own business in Signage Manufacturing.

Over the following 10-15 years, I branched out even further from the signage Industry into Shop Fronts and Shop Fitting which was a natural extension to the Signage division that we were offering.  I gained extensive experience within many trades during this transition which was to be a huge advantage moving forward.

Passions are Key…

My sporting days are limited now at the age of 54, but I do still enjoy a hit of tennis from time to time, and obviously I am very active in my work as a builder. In fact, since the age of 10, I have had a real passion for fishing, and as I got older it became boating and fishing. For me, this provides a real balance between my work life as a self-employed business owner, and my social life. Having an escape, or your down time, whether it’s going to the gym, Surfing, Going out, or in my case Boating and Fishing is absolutely crucial in maintaining that healthy balance of work and play.

Where I am Today…

I have now been involved within the Building and Construction Industry for nearly 40 years since completing my apprenticeship as a Sign writer at 19. Although I was doing what I loved, I was not content in just doing Signwriting and furthered my experience within the Signage and Display Industry incorporating Structural Signage and Neon and Illuminated Signage increasing my skill set to include Steel Manufacturing, Cabinetry, spray painting, Electrical and Sheet Metal work which were all becoming an integral part of the signage Industry.

More recently now, I have focused my direction to the Residential sector rather than the commercial sector. And as a General Builder and Home Renovator, this has provided me so much more satisfaction in the design and construction of Home Renovations, “Peoples Homes” making a significant impact on my customers life’s. I have gained a wide range of knowledge over the years including Interior Design, Home Layout, Home Automation, Home Lighting, Landscaping and lifestyle choices to better enhance and enjoy the little time we all have.

Throughout my career I have also managed to get married and raise two beautiful kids, connect with my childhood sweetheart 37 years down the road and inherit two wonderful step kids, and continue to make a significant impact to people’s lives with unique Home Design, Renovation and Lifestyle Choices.
